SATURDAY IN TOWN AT THE SCHWENDERMARKET, VIENNA/AUSTRIA
Saturday in town
For many years the associtation "Samstag" has been active
in public space. Artistic and cultural interventions stress the meaning
of public space as democratic place and invite to take part in its
design and use. Since summer
2010 we have been at the Schwendermarket in the 15th Viennese district.
In cooperation with neighbours and people
working in the vicinity we realize activities at the market-place. We
plant a garden, cook and eat together, discuss the importance of public
space and food sovereignty and celebrate parties in the name of "Right to the city". Since 2011 we
offer free social care.
In 2015 we were part of the first Vienna Biennale:
With the help of architects we developed a mobile market kitchen which was to be found on various places around Vienna. We cooked and ate in public space,
together with people living in the neighbourhoods, using food which
otherwise would have been thrown away.
